2000-Person Challenge
2,000-Person Community Challenge — Week 1 Recap | The First Step of the Sustainability Exchange Challenge
By 永寓所
The 2,000-Person Challenge kicked off its first week from 7/1 to 7/5. In just five days, 95 members had created accounts, 32 had submitted task reports, and the community had accumulated 49 approved tasks and 103 Action Energy points. From Instagram Live sessions and FAQ answers to social sharing and Coffee Chats, everyone is turning sustainability into an everyday journey of mutual encouragement.

2,000-Person Community Challenge — Week 1 Recap | The First Step We Took Together
The 2,000-Person Sustainability Community Challenge has officially launched.
Week 1 ran from 7/1 to 7/5. Though it was only five days, a wonderful energy began to take shape in the community: some members tuned in to the Instagram Live to learn the challenge rules; others started answering common questions from newcomers to the sustainability field; others wrote posts sharing their sustainability observations; and some had already lined up Coffee Chats, turning "I'd love to meet more people in sustainability" into a real conversation.
This week, what we saw was more than points accumulating — it was everyone choosing, in their own way, to take one extra step for this community. 😇
Some people shared experiences, some offered observations, some responded to questions, and others simply started by watching the live session and completing their first small task. These actions may each seem modest, but together they slowly become what Sustalent Hub is most precious for: a group of people on the sustainability path who see each other, run alongside each other, and remind each other that you don't have to walk this road alone.
Week 1 Task Review: Starting with Getting to Know Each Other and Opening Conversations
The Week 1 task design was very much like a warm-up for the entire challenge.
We wanted everyone to first understand how the event works, and we hoped that sustainability engagement wouldn't remain at the level of "I'd like to give this a try" — but would instead, through a series of small tasks, gradually become concrete action!
The publicly available tasks this week covered five types:
- Flash Tasks: Complete a time-limited task. This week's focus was watching the Sustalent Hub Instagram Live orientation session to understand the format and content of the 2,000-Person Challenge.
- FAQ Answers: Answer frequently asked questions in the community, helping members who are new to sustainability and still finding their footing.
- Social Sharing: Share the event, a sustainability perspective, or task reflections on your own social media platforms, so more people can discover the conversation.
- Coffee Chat Exchange: Have a purposeful conversation with a sustainability peer and leave a note on the topic and your takeaways.
- Custom Tasks: Propose and complete an action related to sustainability exchange, knowledge sharing, or community engagement.
Because Week 1 started on a Wednesday, this first week felt more like everyone finding their rhythm together: learning the rules, finding teammates, responding to a first question, and sending out a first small action. For us, that was a great beginning. 🙃
Participation Stats: 103 Action Energy Points Accumulated in Just Five Days
As of the Week 1 tally, 95 members had completed their challenge profile setup, and 32 members submitted task reports between 7/1 and 7/5.
Week 1 totals:
- 52 task submissions
- 103 approved points
Looking at task types, the hottest categories this week were Flash Tasks and FAQ Answers.
| Task Type | Approved This Week | Points This Week |
|---|---|---|
| Flash Tasks | 19 | 19 pts |
| FAQ Answers | 18 | 36 pts |
| Social Sharing | 7 posts | 21 pts |
| Coffee Chat Exchange | 4 sessions | 24 pts |
| Custom Tasks | 1 | 3 pts |
While using the live sessions to familiarize themselves with the challenge, members simultaneously began answering the sustainability career questions most frequently asked in the community — and that is exactly what Sustalent Hub cares most about.
Sustainability careers are filled with information gaps, and there are many questions people don't know who to ask. When someone is willing to share their experience, the people who come after have a chance to take fewer wrong turns and feel a little less alone.
Team Highlights: All Five Teams Are Already Underway
In Week 1, all five teams had members who started participating.
The reason we designed teams was to give everyone a small group of peers to connect with from the start.
Team scores for the week:
- Team B: 31 pts
- Team C: 23 pts
- Team E: 20 pts
- Team D: 16 pts
- Team A: 13 pts
Team B currently holds the lead, having built up quite a bit of energy through FAQ answers and exchange tasks. Teams C and E are close behind, with active performance on social sharing and flash tasks! Teams A and D may be lower on the leaderboard for now, but both have already logged Live task completions, FAQ answers, social shares, and Coffee Chat reports.
We envision the teams not as rivals but as a way for everyone to feel they have a group of peers moving forward together. Cross-team tasks are also on the way, so teams will have more opportunities to interact with each other down the line.
A Few Wonderful Actions We Noticed This Week
A quick look back at what everyone did in Week 1:
1. Starting with the Live Orientation Session — Finding the Challenge's Shared Rhythm
The most common task completed this week was watching the Instagram Live orientation. Many members submitted their reports with screenshots, viewing records, or brief reflections — ranging from "learned the event rules" to "watched the live introduction of the five challenge task types."
This made the Week 1 flash task feel not just like checking a box, but like a shared starting line.
Everyone entered the same live session to understand what comes next, and began to feel: this isn't a solo challenge — it's a group of people entering the rhythm together.
Sometimes the hardest part of joining a community isn't doing something big; it's taking that first step. Being willing to click into the live, watch the rules all the way through, and submit a report — that is already a great beginning!
2. FAQ Answers Are Growing Into a Mini Sustainability Career Guide
This week's FAQ question was:
With absolutely no sustainability background, what should be the very first step for someone who wants to transition into the sustainability field?
From everyone's answers, several directions came up again and again:
- Take stock of your own background, expertise, and interests to find where they intersect with sustainability.
- Don't rush to pick a career direction right away; start by understanding the different paths — ESG, carbon management, sustainability reporting, supply chains, circular economy, and more.
- Build your own sustainability map gradually through job postings, podcasts, courses, talks, sustainability reports, and conversations with experienced practitioners.
- Take advantage of government-subsidized courses, foundational certificates, or low-cost learning resources — but also remind yourself not to be driven by anxiety.
These answers are invaluable because they aren't a single standard answer, but rather people from different backgrounds bringing out their own experiences of finding their way. Some came in through job postings; others through professional pivots; some cautioned against letting certification anxiety take hold; others shared how they came to understand this field one step at a time.
These responses, accumulated together, will gradually become a sustainability career guide co-written by the community — not one expert telling everyone from the top down what to do, but many people already on the path sharing their experiences and filling in the signposts along the sustainability career road.
3. Social Sharing Is Bringing Sustainability Careers to More Platforms
This week, members have already shared sustainability perspectives and event reflections on Instagram, LinkedIn, Threads, and other platforms.
Topics included sustainability careers, consumption-related carbon emissions, furniture rental, sustainability forum takeaways, and "the strongest skills for sustainability professionals," among others. These posts let the 2,000-Person Challenge extend beyond the Sustalent Hub community and slowly spread outward — and we're excited to see what conversations they spark.
Perhaps someone will see a post and realize for the first time that sustainability careers come in many shapes; perhaps someone will comment, DM, follow up — or even join the community. These are the ways community energy grows outward. 🥰
4. Custom Tasks Let Everyone Participate in Their Own Way
This week, a member also used the custom task option to report on her ongoing sustainability observation content. This member, Cindy, draws on her perspective from living abroad to share local sustainability practices through Instagram Reels and illustrated posts, with the goal of helping people who aren't necessarily in the sustainability sector discover environmental and sustainability issues through everyday life.
On the subject of custom tasks: we encourage everyone to use the approach they're best at to start a conversation. As long as it promotes sustainability exchange, knowledge sharing, or community engagement, it can become part of this challenge!
5. Coffee Chats Are Turning "I Want to Meet Someone in the Field" into Concrete Action
Coffee Chat reports have already started coming in this week. Conversation topics included sustainability career development, job searching abroad, AI applications in sustainability, and how cross-disciplinary skills can translate into sustainability work. These conversations may not immediately yield answers, but they're very likely to surface the next question, the next direction, or the next person to think things through with.
For many members who want to enter the sustainability field, simply having someone who is willing to talk with them is enormously meaningful — because a sustainability career is often not a clearly marked road. Many people don't know which angle suits them, how their existing skills can transfer, or where to find people who will share genuine, ground-level experience.
That is exactly where Coffee Chat delivers.
It doesn't have to be a formal consultation, and it doesn't need to reach a perfect conclusion. But if a single conversation helps someone see more clearly where their next step might lead, it has already been deeply worthwhile.
What Did We See This Week?
After Week 1, what struck us most wasn't the leaderboard — it was seeing everyone begin to draw closer to each other in different ways. Some moved quickly; others were still observing. Some had already completed several tasks; others had simply watched the live and submitted that first report.
All of that is wonderful!
We know that not everyone is used to speaking up proactively in a community, and not everyone knows from the start what they can contribute. But what this challenge aims to create is not pressure — it's a gentle push.
A reason to start sharing.
A reason to ask a question.
A reason to set up a Coffee Chat.
A reason to take the sustainability observations you've been keeping to yourself and turn them into a post, a reply, or a conversation.
Community connection grows from these small actions.
Let's Keep Going Next Week: No Need for Perfection — Just One More Step
In the week ahead, we invite everyone to keep participating at your own pace.
If you haven't submitted a task yet, start with the easiest one.
If you've already completed your first task, try a different type: from FAQ to social sharing, or from social sharing to a Coffee Chat.
If you see someone in your team complete a task, feel free to leave a response. Maybe it's "This share was really helpful!" Maybe you add your own experience. Maybe you ask if they'd like to chat.
These interactions may not immediately produce any tangible outcome, but they will gradually make the community warmer.
Finally, here's a small question to leave with everyone:
Which task this week gave you an unexpected reward?
If you have an answer in mind, feel free to turn it into your next task report, your next post, or the opening line of your next Coffee Chat.
The Sustalent Hub 2,000-Person Challenge has just begun.
Thank you to every member who took one step forward in Week 1. From here, let's keep turning sustainability exchange into everyday life — and together grow Sustalent Hub into an even warmer, more powerful home.
Also, everyone can find their LINE group link in their personal dashboard — feel free to join your group and find your teammates!
