For most people, joining a new community takes some time to get comfortable. Sustalent Hub's membership is especially diverse: corporate sustainability / ESG, sustainability consulting, carbon management, research institutions, social innovation, students, job seekers, and sustainability solutions providers of all kinds. When you first arrive, it can be hard to know what questions are appropriate to ask, what kind of content is worth sharing, or how to start meeting people.

This article is intended as a simple guide to help you understand more quickly:

After joining Sustalent Hub, how can you make the most of this community?

Start with the Announcements and Community Guidelines

Sustalent Hub currently operates primarily within a LINE community group. Once you have joined, your first step should be to read the pinned posts and the community guidelines in the group notes. These will help you understand the basics of how the community works — for example, which kinds of content can be posted directly in the main group, which commercial activities or promotional content belong in a designated area, and what standard of interaction we all aim to maintain.

Sustalent Hub is an open space for exchange, but openness does not mean anything goes. A healthy community atmosphere requires everyone to maintain it together. 🥳

We want this to be a place where people feel safe asking questions, sharing experiences, and making connections — not a place swamped by advertisements, off-topic posts, or heated arguments.

What Can You Do in Sustalent Hub?

Sustalent Hub is not just a place to consume information. More importantly, you can use it as a space for sustainability professionals to connect with and support each other.

Here are some of the things you can do in the community:

1. Ask Questions About Your Sustainability Career

If you are exploring a sustainability career path — or thinking through a career change, a job search, or which direction to head — you are welcome to bring your questions to the community.

For example:

• Understanding the differences between corporate ESG and sustainability consulting
• Learning what skills are needed for carbon inventory roles
• Getting advice on how to evaluate a sustainability job posting
• Asking whether a particular sustainability certification or course is right for you

We do encourage you to organise your background and your question before posting — the more clearly you frame things, the more useful and specific the responses you will get.

2. Share Your Experience

If you are already working in sustainability, you are very welcome to share your observations from the field — it does not have to be a polished, formal article. A short, honest account of your experience can often help someone who is still finding their way.

For example:

• A challenge you ran into recently while working on a sustainability report
• Reflections on driving an internal carbon reduction project
• Your experience navigating cross-departmental communication
• Takeaways from a sustainability event or course you attended
• An honest account of what a particular sustainability role actually involves

Sustainability work has a texture that textbooks, training courses, and job descriptions simply cannot capture. When you are willing to share what you have lived, you give others a chance to avoid the detours you had to take. 👻

3. Share Job Openings You Recommend

If you come across a strong sustainability-related job opening, you are welcome to share it with the community. Sustalent Hub has many members who are actively looking for opportunities, preparing for a career change, or simply want to understand where the market is heading. When you share a posting, going beyond just dropping a link can make a real difference:

• Who this role is a good fit for
• Why you think it is worth recommending
• What makes the organisation or team distinctive
• If you know the role well, a description of the actual day-to-day work

That kind of context is far more valuable than a bare link.

4. Find Collaborators

Sustalent Hub brings together people from a wide range of backgrounds, which makes it well suited for finding potential collaborators. If you are organising an event, looking for a speaker, seeking a project partner, recruiting research participants, or hoping to connect with someone in a specific part of the field — you are welcome to raise it in the community, after checking with the community manager first.

When looking for collaborators, try to be as clear as possible about:

• What you are trying to do
• Where the project currently stands
• What kind of person you are looking for
• What commitment would be required from the other person
• Whether there is any compensation or other form of reciprocation

The clearer your description, the more likely you are to find the right person.

How to Ask a Question That Gets Answered

Often, whether a question gets a response has less to do with people's willingness to help and more to do with how clearly the question is framed.

When asking a question, we encourage you to do three things:

1. Share your background first
2. Describe your situation or problem specifically
3. Explain what you have already tried or where you are stuck

A very broad question like:

"I want to work in ESG. What should I do?"

is not a bad question — it is just too wide open for people to know where to begin answering.

A better version might look like this:

"Hi everyone — I have a marketing background and three years of work experience, and I have recently been thinking about moving into corporate sustainability or sustainability brand communications. I have already read through some material on ESG, GRI, and sustainability reporting, and listened to a few sustainability career podcasts, but I am still not sure what capabilities are typically expected in communications- or project-management-oriented roles within corporate sustainability teams. I would really appreciate advice from anyone with relevant experience on what skills or portfolio pieces I should prioritise building."

That kind of question is much more likely to generate concrete, useful advice — because people can see your background, your goal, what you have already done, and precisely what you are asking.

The Kind of Interaction We Encourage

The culture we hope Sustalent Hub develops is not one of one-way asking, but of mutual support.

We strongly encourage members to:

• Respond to other people's questions
• Share genuine, first-hand experience
• Proactively start discussions
• Approach people from different backgrounds with an open mind
• Offer specific, honest advice within the range of what they actually know

You do not need to be a senior expert to have something worth sharing.

Sometimes your recent experience successfully switching careers is exactly what someone currently preparing for a career change needs to hear. Your notes from a certification exam you just finished could help the next person studying for it. The real confusion you encountered at work might let someone else realise they are not facing it alone.

A community's value does not come only from having impressive people in it — it comes from everyone being willing to let their experience flow and become useful to others.

Things We Ask You to Avoid

To help the community maintain a high quality of exchange, there are a few things we ask members to steer clear of.

First, avoid excessive self-promotion. Commercial activities, paid courses, products, services, and other promotional content should follow the community guidelines and be posted in the designated promotional area — please do not turn the main discussion space into an advertising wall.

Second, avoid dropping content without engaging. If you use the community purely as a broadcast channel without participating in any exchange, it will gradually erode the trust others have in you.

Third, avoid posting content unrelated to sustainability. Sustalent Hub's core focus is sustainability careers, sustainability work, the sustainability industry, and related resources. Off-topic content dilutes what makes the community valuable.

Fourth, avoid personal attacks and disrespectful behaviour. Members come from different backgrounds, hold different views, and have different experiences. Disagreement is welcome — but please maintain basic respect. Good discussion does not mean avoiding challenge; it means exchanging perspectives in a spirit of openness.

Beyond Online Exchange — Join an Event

Sustalent Hub is not only an online community. We also organise events of different kinds so that members have the chance to meet in person or in more immersive settings. Past events have included:

Sustalent Hub also maintains a list called the Sustainability Partner Universe — designed to make it easier for community members to find and connect with one another, spark conversations, and even set up coffee chats or collaborations. This list is not publicly visible on the open website. To access it, you first need to join the LINE community group, and then fill out the "Help Build Sustalent Hub" form.
